Our last full day in paradise brought the promise of adventure and all the emotions.\u00a0<\/p><p>Weeks earlier I had learned about an off-the-beaten-path waterfall hike from a friend called &#8220;La Leona Waterfall&#8221; and after a little clicking around I met Fabricio from <strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/laleonacatarata.com\/es\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Catarata La Leona Costa Rica<\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/p><p>Fabricio spends most of his days working remotely online, but his mornings find him taking folks on adventures to Catarata La Leona (La Leona Waterfall). I was taken by his passion and excitement for the adventure! the perfect setting for a hike to Catarata La Leona.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>The waterfall, as well as Rio Blanco, is formed from the Rincon de la Viejo Volcano, and the mineral rich soil from the lava creates a unique and mesmerizing blue color in the water.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>It is otherworldly&#8230;especially where the canyons create a tunnel for the light from above.\u00a0 We kept pausing on the hike to just stare at the beauty all around us. Of course river is not just a pretty face\u2026. the volcano also supplies thermal energy for Costa Rica, contributing to the country\u2019s almost sole reliance on renewable energy &#8211;\u00a0 impressive, right? This is information we don&#8217;t even imagine exist when visiting La Leona Waterfall.<\/p><p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3898 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/laleonacatarata.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/riverhike-1-1-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" title=\"\"><\/p><h2>Fabricio &amp; Maya<\/h2><p>This particular hike is for those who want a little extra adventure at La Leona Waterfall &#8211; it\u2019s not an easy path. But that\u2019s the way we like it &#8211; the more adventure the better!\u00a0 After crossing the river a couple of times, and then heading up the steeper side of the mountain.\u00a0<\/p><p>We used makeshift ladders to scamper up the steeper parts and Fabricio\u2019s rope to make it across a particularly narrow and steep ridge.\u00a0 He and Maya knew all the best areas to pause and wonder. We saw a small cave with bats hovering inside, lots of spiders and centipedes, blue morpho butterflies flitting just above us, and of course all to the soundtrack of the rushing river below.\u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3900 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/laleonacatarata.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/CataratalaLeonagroup-1-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/laleonacatarata.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/CataratalaLeonagroup-1-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/laleonacatarata.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/CataratalaLeonagroup-1-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/laleonacatarata.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/CataratalaLeonagroup-1-600x800.jpg 600w, https:\/\/laleonacatarata.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/CataratalaLeonagroup-1.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p><h2><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\">The Slide<\/span><\/h2><p>After traversing up the hillside a ways, we made our way back down to the river to a natural rock slide built into the river rocks. Apart from a tarp to reduce scratches, nature did the rest to create this fun little stop &#8211; and the kids loved it!\u00a0 Elo\u2019s review says it all &#8211; \u201cThe only part I didn\u2019t like is that I couldn\u2019t do it 100 times!\u201d haha.\u00a0 So much fun plunging into the chilly, blue water below.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3901\" src=\"https:\/\/laleonacatarata.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/IMG_7104-e1635438782548-990x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"620\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/laleonacatarata.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/IMG_7104-e1635438782548-990x1024.jpg 990w, https:\/\/laleonacatarata.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/IMG_7104-e1635438782548-290x300.jpg 290w, https:\/\/laleonacatarata.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/IMG_7104-e1635438782548-768x794.jpg 768w, https:\/\/laleonacatarata.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/IMG_7104-e1635438782548-600x620.jpg 600w, https:\/\/laleonacatarata.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/IMG_7104-e1635438782548.jpg 999w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p><h2><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\">The Jump<\/span><\/h2><p>On down the river, we greeted our next adventure high &#8211; a boulder perfectly made for jumping about 15 feet into the water below.\u00a0 Viv + Elo opted to make the jump, and thanks to Jon volunteering to walk the others down, I got to join them (thanks babe!:)\u00a0<\/p><p>It was just high enough for a thrill, but not so high that I was freaked out about the kids jumping.\u00a0 I\u2019d do just about anything to be back there right now, jumping off the rock ledge into the pool below.\u00a0 And Elo was beside herself with joy. Just a week earlier she had sat on top of the 2nd waterfall at Montezuma falls, sobbing into the jungle because we wouldn\u2019t let her jump.\u00a0 This was her redemption leap, and I loved seeing the sheer joy on my little adventure lover\u2019s face.<\/p><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3902 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/laleonacatarata.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Linc-2-1-e1635438891386.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"524\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/laleonacatarata.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Linc-2-1-e1635438891386.jpg 999w, https:\/\/laleonacatarata.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Linc-2-1-e1635438891386-287x300.jpg 287w, https:\/\/laleonacatarata.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Linc-2-1-e1635438891386-978x1024.jpg 978w, https:\/\/laleonacatarata.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Linc-2-1-e1635438891386-768x804.jpg 768w, https:\/\/laleonacatarata.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Linc-2-1-e1635438891386-600x628.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3903 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/laleonacatarata.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Candicejump.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"667\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/laleonacatarata.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Candicejump.jpg 500w, https:\/\/laleonacatarata.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Candicejump-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p><h2><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\">Back on the trail<\/span><\/h2><p>\u00a0We were giddy with excitement, knowing the best part was still ahead.\u00a0 Just a little further up the river, a blue pool was waiting with rapids at one end and at the other end a narrow canyon creating the secret, hidden entrance to the waterfall.\u00a0 I literally gasped at the beauty and power of the water.\u00a0<\/p><p>The canyon walls funneled a beam of light down on the water from high above, as well as a strong current flowing from the waterfall pool through the canyon to where we stared, awestruck.\u00a0 In the middle, it\u2019s about 10 feet deep &#8211; too deep to walk and also really challenging to swim against the current.\u00a0<\/p><p>A rope runs from La Leona Waterfall area down the canyon and anchors just beyond the rapids. It hovers just a few feet above the water and serves as a way to pull yourself up the stream. But still, the current is just too strong for most people to get all the way through, so Fabricio left us waiting and managed his way up the canyon with another rope.\u00a0<\/p><p>\u00a0Each of us shimmied our way up the rope, and just as the current became too strong, Fabricio tossed us the next rope and we grabbed on while he pulled us through the canyon and into the hidden waterfall area just beyond.\u00a0 It was tough, and exhilarating, and nerve wracking and gorgeous&#8230;pure adrenaline!<\/p><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3904\" src=\"https:\/\/laleonacatarata.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/ethereal-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"451\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/laleonacatarata.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/ethereal-1.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/laleonacatarata.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/ethereal-1-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/laleonacatarata.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/ethereal-1-768x577.jpg 768w, https:\/\/laleonacatarata.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/ethereal-1-600x451.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p><p>But the real awe-inspiring moment, as if all that wasn\u2019t enough, is when you are pulled to the other side of the canyon &#8211; you regain your footing, look up\u2026..and you\u2019re face to face with Catarata La Leona herself.\u00a0 She is about 30 feet tall and especially in rainy season gushes massive amounts of water into the blue pool below.\u00a0 What makes her extra special besides her brilliant blue color is her hiding place inside the cave that makes her less accessible than other waterfalls&#8230; the best reward after the intensity of getting there.<\/p><h2><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\">la Catarata la Leona<\/span><\/h2><div><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3248 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/laleonacatarata.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Diseno-sin-titulo-27-min.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"960\" height=\"720\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/laleonacatarata.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Diseno-sin-titulo-27-min.png 960w, https:\/\/laleonacatarata.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Diseno-sin-titulo-27-min-300x225.png 300w, https:\/\/laleonacatarata.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Diseno-sin-titulo-27-min-768x576.png 768w, https:\/\/laleonacatarata.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Diseno-sin-titulo-27-min-600x450.png 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><\/p><p class=\"\">Inside the cave, with la Leona Waterfall&#8217;s presence and mist filling the air, you can take as much time as you want, swimming in the pool or just resting on the rocks. The chill is very real as the wind coming off the falls and the cold water are inside the rock walls, with very little sunlight to warm anything. I highly recommend our guide, Fabricio, with <strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/laleonacatarata.com\/es\/\" target=\"\">La Leona Waterfall Adventure Tours<\/a><\/span><\/strong>. He was so great with the kids and was able to give us lots of interesting info about the waterfall and the history of the area.<\/p><h3><span style=\"color: #993300;\">Hours<\/span><\/h3><p class=\"\">Tours start around 8am-9am in the morning and run for about 3 hours<\/p><h3><span style=\"color: #993300;\">Facilities<\/span><\/h3><p class=\"\">There are no facilities on the hike or at the waterfall. Make sure and bring water and use the restroom before you get to the river.<\/p><h3><span style=\"color: #993300;\">What to Pack<\/span><\/h3><p class=\"\">Close toed shoes or hiking sandals like Chacos, sunscreen, bug spray, towel and change of clothes to leave in the car, snacks for the hike (although we didn\u2019t end up needing them), water bottle, camera, bandaids (always \ud83d\ude09<\/p><h3><span style=\"color: #993300;\">Things to Know<\/span><\/h3><p class=\"\">I recommend wearing a swimsuit with quick dry shorts on top\u2026.beware of bikinis &#8211; it\u2019s an adventurous hike! :).
